  Toilet lid tip

November 14, 2001

To estimate the age of a house, go to the bathroom and take the lid off the toilet. Most toilets have the date of manufacture stamped on the lid. This is usually near the date the toilet was installed. I learned this tip when I was shopping for a pre-owned home. -- E. G.

ANSWER: Thanks to many readers who responded to the item asking how to tell when a house had been remodeled. I had suggested judging by the plumbing fixtures, so I was close. Of course if the toilet had been replaced, that wouldn't give us the original age of the house, but it's a start.
