  Can they charge me?

My mortgage company recently sold my mortgage to a new company. The new company wants to charge a small fee per month for a mortgage statement I used to receive free from my old lender. Can the new company charge for this service? Just curious. -- C. D.

ANSWER: Mortgage lenders are required by law to send you a year-end statement of all activity on your loan. Beyond that, some send monthly statements, some don't.

So if you requested those monthly statements, they may have a right to the fee. I'm just curious myself -- is this something you asked for, or do they charge for it routinely?
